About Our Founder
Born and raised in Suffolk, VA, after serving in the U.S. Army, Pete Doughtie began his newspaper career in 1968. He worked his way from advertising sales in Suffolk, Indiana and California to publisher and partner of a newspaper by 1983.
In 1998, after the sale of the paper and a brief retirement, Pete and his wife, Kaye, moved to Murfreesboro, TN to be closer to their grandchildren. Retirement didn’t suit him. Missing the business, Pete decided to start up a small classified tab in 2000, naming it The Rutherford Reader. After seeing a need to add local news and, eventually, national-worthy news, the paper became known as The Reader. Pete, being the true Patriot that he was, always insisted on continually pursuing the truth, at all cost, with a God-fearing, Conservative viewpoint.
We search for the truth, embrace the truth, and print the truth. If we inadvertently print something that is not true, we will let our readers know. We are open to documented information to shed light on any issue of concern to our readers. We are of service to our communities the best way we can.
The opinions in columns and commentaries that appear in The Reader do not necessarily reflect this newspaper’s views.
